Jammu & Kashmir, Jan 13: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has expressed his appreciation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to fulfilling electoral promises, particularly the conduct of elections in the Union Territory. Speaking at the inauguration of the Z-Morh tunnel on Monday, Omar Abdullah highlighted the significance of this milestone and urged for the timely restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.
During his address, Omar Abdullah remarked, “After securing his third term, Prime Minister Modi participated in the International Yoga Day in Srinagar, where he assured the people that elections would be conducted. True to his word, elections were held within four months, and today, as Chief Minister, I stand here addressing you as a result of those polls.”
He emphasized the enthusiastic participation of the public, noting that the elections were free from allegations of rigging or misuse of power, showcasing a robust democratic process.
The Chief Minister also reminded the audience of another promise made by PM Modi—the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. “People often ask me about this. I remind them that the Prime Minister has already fulfilled his promise of holding elections. I firmly believe that the restoration of statehood will also happen soon, and Jammu and Kashmir will regain its status as a state in the Union,” he said.
Omar Abdullah lauded the Prime Minister’s efforts in fostering peace along the borders, which he said have significantly benefited remote regions such as Machil, Gurez, Karnah, and Keran. “Development and tourism are thriving in these areas, with increasing numbers of tourists visiting,” he noted.
Speaking about the infrastructural developments, Omar Abdullah hailed the year-round connectivity made possible by the Z-Morh tunnel and the upcoming Sonamarg tunnel, stating that such projects will reduce the isolation of upper-reach communities and promote economic growth.
He also paid tribute to the seven civilians who lost their lives in a terrorist attack at Gagangir during the construction of the Z-Morh tunnel last year.
Z-Morh Tunnel: A Game-Changer for Connectivity
Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the 6.5 km Z-Morh tunnel in Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district on Monday, ensuring year-round access to the picturesque Sonamarg tourist resort. The project, constructed at a cost of over ?2,700 crore, includes a two-lane roadway and a 7.5-metre-wide emergency escape passage, enhancing both connectivity and safety.
PM Modi was accompanied by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during the event. The Z-Morh tunnel, connecting Gagangir and Sonamarg, is expected to significantly boost tourism and development in the region.
