Mangaluru: Man with drugs, lethal weapon arrested in Panambur

Mangaluru, Jan 15: Acting on credible information, Panambur police arrested a man for possessing narcotic substances and a dangerous weapon near NMPT old truck yard in Panambur.

Based on a tip-off about a person carrying drugs and a sword along the road leading to Pump House, Panambur PSI Shrikhala KT and her team conducted a raid on January 15 at around 3 pm. The operation, carried out under the guidance of Mangaluru City North ACP Srikant K and Panambur Inspector Saleem Abbas, led to the arrest of Umar Farooq, also known as Mutton Farooq (32), a resident of Kasaba Bendre in Mangaluru.

Police seized 1.72 grams of methamphetamine worth Rs 4,000 and a dangerous weapon (sword) from the accused. A case has been registered at Panambur Police Station under NDPS Act sections 8(C) and 22(a) of 1985, along with sections 4 and 25(1-B)(b) of the Indian Arms Act.

The accused, Umar Farooq, is reportedly involved in over nine criminal cases registered across police stations in Panambur, Kankanady Town, Ullal, Mangaluru South, and East, as well as Uppinangady in Dakshina Kannada and Yagati in Chikkamagaluru district. Warrants were pending against him at Uppinangady and Kankanady Town police stations, and he had been evading arrest.

The operation was executed under the supervision of city police commissioner Anupam Agarwal IPS, DCP law and order Siddharth Goel IPS, and DCP (crime and traffic) Ravishankar. The team comprised ACP Srikant K, Inspector Saleem Abbas, PSIs Shrikhala KT and Gyanashekar, and crime division personnel, including HCs Premananda, Syed Intiyaz, James, and constables Rakesh L M, Fakirsh, Basavaraj Gurikar, and Sharanappa Gollar.

Further investigation is underway.
