New Delhi, Jan 18: Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has stirred a debate ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad announcement, stating that Rishabh Pant has reached a level comparable to the legendary MS Dhoni in Test cricket. However, Kaif also emphasized that Sanju Samson’s recent performances in white-ball cricket put him ahead in the race for the wicketkeeper’s slot.

In a discussion on his YouTube channel, Kaif highlighted the emotional attachment fans have with Pant due to his remarkable performances in Test matches, particularly citing his iconic Gabba knock and a century in South Africa. "Rishabh Pant is a match-winner in Tests, especially in overseas conditions. As a wicketkeeper, he is better than Sanju Samson and has almost reached MS Dhoni's level," Kaif said.

Despite this, Kaif pointed out the need for Pant to focus on his white-ball stats, which have not been as impressive. “Pant needs to recognize the reality. His white-ball numbers are not as strong as Sanju Samson’s. He needs to work hard and avoid listening to people who say he’s being treated unfairly,” Kaif remarked.

Sanju Samson, who has scored 510 runs in 16 ODIs at an impressive average of 56.66, has been in red-hot form. With three centuries in his last five T20Is, including a ton against South Africa in December 2023, the 30-year-old has made a strong case for his inclusion in the Champions Trophy squad.

On the other hand, Pant’s ODI record stands at 871 runs in 31 matches at an average of 33.50, with five fifties and one hundred. While his Test performances remain unparalleled, Kaif believes Samson has earned the opportunity for the Champions Trophy based on current form.

The debate over India’s wicketkeeping slot remains one of the most closely watched storylines ahead of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. With KL Rahul also in contention, the selectors face a tough decision in choosing the best option for the mega event.
