Mangaluru: Lourdes Central School conducts mock fire drill

Mangaluru, Jan 23: On the occasion of the National Fire Drill Day, Lourdes Central School conducted a mock fire drill on January 22, with an aim to create awareness among the students about fire-fighting techniques and the ways to respond swiftly in times of such emergency situation.

An announcement was made a day before to inform all the students about the upcoming mock drill. The students were given detailed instructions on the exits, assembly points, and dos and don’ts that must be followed during an emergency. Throughout the drill, the students remained calm and followed the instructions provided, filing in single lines while assembling.

Teachers were provided with instructions in advance, and the evacuation process was re-emphasised to ensure a successful drill.

On the day of the drill a fire alarm was sounded to simulate an emergency fire. The ‘evacuation’ operation soon began. The students of class VIII on the first floor exited the building that leads to the school ground and assembled in front of the school stage. A demonstration of using fire safety equipment was conducted by the experts from the department of fire and emergency services to sensitise the staff and students about life-saving, rescue techniques and various method of putting off the flames in case of fire. During the mock fire drill, the fire station officer Praveen Kumar gave a step-by-step explanation of safety techniques as they were being performed.

During the school assembly, the fire station officer Praveen Kumar in his speech reinforced the significance of the drill, its role in ensuring safety and prioritising personal safety over money and valuables during emergencies.

Fr Principal, in his address highlighted the importance of learning beyond the classroom, emphasising preparedness for emergencies. He reminded the children to retain and apply this knowledge throughout their lives. He appreciated the fire station officer and Suraj for their dedication and thanked them for their support. The officer was presented with a memento in recognition for the successful execution of the entire operation.

Overall, the drill was an important exercise that helped to ensure the safety of all students in the event of a real emergency.
