Pune, Jan 25: Pune has reported six additional suspected cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), bringing the total count to 73, according to health officials.

The state health department had previously set up a Rapid Response Team (RRT) on January 21 to investigate the sudden surge in suspected GBS cases, with an initial 24 cases identified. The new cases have raised concerns, prompting increased surveillance and monitoring in affected areas.

As of now, the total number of suspected GBS cases stands at 73, including 47 men and 26 women. Of these, 14 patients are reportedly on ventilator support, as their conditions remain critical.

The RRT, along with the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) health department, continues to closely monitor and survey affected areas, particularly the Sinhgad Road locality. A total of 7,215 houses have been surveyed, including 1,943 homes within PMC limits, 1,750 homes in Chinchwad Municipal Corporation areas, and 3,522 homes in rural parts of the district.

GBS is a rare, immune-mediated disorder that leads to sudden numbness and muscle weakness. Symptoms include severe weakness in limbs and gastrointestinal issues such as loose motions. Doctors indicate that viral and bacterial infections typically trigger GBS by weakening the immune system.

While the condition is seen in both children and young adults, health experts have assured the public that GBS does not pose a threat of becoming an epidemic or pandemic. With proper medical intervention, most patients are expected to recover fully.
