Kashmir Police Convoy Attacked, Five Injured


Srinagar, Jan 7 (IANS): Separatist guerrillas Saturday attacked the convoy of the Sopore district police chief in Jammu and Kashmir, injuring two of his guards and three civilians, police said. A militant was also killed in retaliatory fire by police.

"Militants attacked the convoy of the Sopore Superintendent of Police (SP), Syed Imtiyaz Hussain. They first lobbed a grenade and then fired from automatic weapons," a senior police officer said. Sopore in north Kashmir is 54 km from Srinagar.

"Two guards of the SP and three civilians were injured. One militant was killed in retaliatory fire by police," S.M. Sahai, the Inspector General of Police, told IANS.
