Udupi, Feb 1: Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) is set to host the 7th edition of the Manipal Marathon, one of India’s largest student-organised marathons, on February 9. This year’s marathon embraces the theme, "Innovation in Motion: Embracing Technology for Health and Fitness," focusing on how modern technology can enhance health and fitness.

A groundbreaking feature of this year’s marathon is the Manipal Global Virtual 5K Run, which enables participants from around the world to take part remotely. This initiative makes the marathon a truly global event, allowing runners from different countries to join in the spirit of the race. Virtual runners will receive e-certificates, digital bibs, and exclusive Manipal Marathon merchandise, fostering a global sense of community.

With over 20,000 runners expected, including more than 100 international athletes from countries like the USA, France, Germany, Ethiopia, Kenya, Australia, and others, this year’s edition will highlight inclusivity. Over 300 visually impaired runners from the Samarthanam Trust and more than 200 physically challenged participants from across Karnataka will take part, showcasing their determination and commitment to fitness.

The marathon features multiple race categories catering to all levels of runners:

  • Full Marathon (42.195 km) for professional runners
  • Half Marathon (21.098 km) for semi-professional athletes
  • Timed 10K and 5K Runs for amateur runners
  • 3K Fun Run, with free on-spot registration for beginners and families to enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere.

The marathon will also host a grand carnival at Greens Manipal from 4 am to 10 am, offering live performances, cultural displays, fitness activities, and food stalls, making the event an unforgettable experience for both participants and spectators.

Dr H S Ballal, pro-chancellor of MAHE, shared his pride in the marathon’s growth: "Each year, the Manipal Marathon continues to break new ground, bringing together thousands of runners in a celebration of athleticism, inclusivity, and perseverance. I am thrilled to see how this event has evolved into a platform that not only promotes fitness but also fosters a strong sense of community. I urge everyone to participate, embrace the experience, and take this as an opportunity to embark on a journey toward a healthier lifestyle."

This year’s theme, "Innovation in Motion," emphasises the role of technology in fitness, highlighting advancements such as wearable fitness trackers, AI-driven training plans, and real-time performance tracking. Runners will have access to cutting-edge race timing systems, AI-powered fitness analytics, and Virtual Reality (VR) booths at the BIB Expo, providing immersive experiences related to marathons.

Lieutenant General (Dr) M D Venkatesh, vice chancellor of MAHE, spoke about the significance of the event: "The Manipal Marathon is not just a race, it is a movement that unites people through the shared pursuit of health, fitness, and social responsibility. This year, with our theme ‘Innovation in Motion,’ we are embracing the role of technology in transforming the fitness landscape. The addition of the Manipal Global Virtual 5K Run expands our reach, enabling runners from all over the world to join this remarkable initiative. We look forward to an event that celebrates resilience, determination, and community spirit."

Dr. Sharath Rao, pro vice chancellor (Health Sciences), emphasised the broader impact of the marathon: "The Manipal Marathon has become a symbol of inclusivity and empowerment. As a student-led initiative, it encourages holistic development, fostering not only physical fitness but also a strong sense of social responsibility. This year, our focus on innovation in health and fitness underscores our commitment to promoting a technology-driven approach to well-being. We encourage everyone, whether in Manipal or participating virtually, to be a part of this transformative experience. The number of participants grows with each edition. Walking and running are essential for physical and mental health, and this event should be celebrated as a carnival for the entire Udupi community."

Vinod Nayak, professor in the Department of Forensic Medicine, provided further details: "The Manipal Marathon is held annually on the second Sunday of February, with the race flagged off at KMC Greens. Each year, the event continues to grow in popularity. The marathon highlights important social causes such as drug addiction, health, and mental wellness. ICICI Bank is the title sponsor, with SBI, BOBCARD, and Unext also sponsoring the event.

A 3K fun run will take place on campus, and sensors along the route will capture data via the chips on participants' bibs. We’re expecting up to 20,000 runners, and registration has been extended until February 2. The marathon’s scenic beach route is one of its main attractions, with each category following different routes.

Runners must collect their bibs and T-shirts on February 7 and 8 at KMC Greens between 9 am and 5 pm. For the 3K, T-shirts will be distributed on February 9 starting at 4 am. This year, we are introducing a virtual category, where around 10,000 runners will participate remotely, using running apps to track their performance.

Virtual participants will have their T-shirts and medals shipped to them. On marathon day, a variety of fun activities and a carnival will be held. Additionally, we will have 150 physically challenged and 250 visually challenged runners participating in the 42K, 21K, and 10K events, making up a total of 400 specially-abled participants."

The BIB Expo, scheduled for February 7 and 8, will serve as a key pre-event highlight, providing participants with race kits, interactive fitness workshops, and the opportunity to explore emerging innovations in the fitness industry. All registered runners can pick up their T-shirts and kits at the expo, while 3K runners will receive their T-shirts on marathon day, February 9.

The event is supported by ICICI Bank, SBI, Unext, and Bank of Baroda (Credit Card Division), underscoring the significance of sports in community building and well-being.

With an internationally certified race route (IAAF AIMS Certified), a prize pool of more than Rs 25 lacs, and a focus on social responsibility, inclusivity, and technological advancements in fitness, the Manipal Marathon 2025 promises to be one of the most significant running events in India.

The marathon route, which offers a breathtaking view of the Malpe Beach, includes:

  • Full Marathon (42 km): Starting at MAHE, passing through Perampalli, Malpe Beach, Udupi, and finishing at MAHE.
