Udupi, Feb 4: “Blood is life. Donating blood brings a sense of satisfaction. It is important to educate the youth about the significance of blood donation and cultivate awareness among them. Blood donation also provides health benefits,” said Dr Suresh Shenoy, president of the Indian Medical Association Udupi Karavali. He was speaking at the inauguration of a blood donation camp organized on Tuesday, February 4 at the premises of Udupi Jamiya Masjid in collaboration with the Udupi Muslim Welfare Association and Manipal KMC Blood Centre.
Dr Shamee Shastry, head of KMC Blood Centre, emphasized that blood donation is a noble deed. “A single blood donation can save the lives of three to four people. Every day, we require 100-150 units of blood, but only 10-15 people voluntarily come forward to donate. This leads to a significant shortage of blood. Additionally, misconceptions about blood donation need to be addressed,” she said.
Muhammad Maula, president of the Udupi District Muslim Federation, noted that despite advancements in the medical field, artificial blood has not yet been successfully created as a substitute. “The only way to overcome the shortage is through voluntary blood donation. Blood donation should be considered a social responsibility,” he said.
Association general secretary VS Umar welcomed the gathering, while Riyaz Kukkikatte recited Qirat and delivered the vote of thanks. Iqbal Manna hosted the event.
Riyaz Ahmad, president of Udupi Jamiya Masjid, and social activist Muneer Kalmadi were the chief guests. Association president Muneer Muhammad was also present.
