Mangaluru: Rare Olive Ridley sea turtles spotted on Sasihithlu beach

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Feb 4: The endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles have been spotted along the Mangaluru coastline again this year, where they have laid eggs.

The turtles arrived at Sasihithlu Beach on the city’s outskirts and nested along the shore.

Cameras have captured footage of the turtles coming ashore to lay eggs. Local fishermen have taken special measures to protect the eggs.

In the past, turtle nests have been found at around 12 locations near Mangaluru, including Tannirbavi, Sasihithlu, and Bengre.

Olive Ridley sea turtles are protected under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act. These rare turtles are known for returning to the same place where they were born to lay their eggs.

I hope and believe that these turtles will not be disturbed and they be taken care of that they will migrate in bigger numbers to our Mangalorean shores. It will be such a joy to see them.

Good to know rare turtles are now in mangalore too.All turtels are return to lay eggs where they are born. Many times either eggs are being stolen by people to use it self or to sell.sometimes when they are born and want to enter see ,either they are being picked up by other birds or being loosing their way and end up in hot sun.Better to guard them and save them.
