Kasargod, Feb 10: The Badiadka police have taken a Yakshagana artiste into custody for allegedly blackmailing a priest by luring him into a relationship through Facebook, obtaining explicit photos and videos, and then demanding money.

The accused has been identified as Ashwath Acharya (33), a resident of Kolambe in Mangaluru taluk. According to reports, Acharya befriended the priest on Facebook and maintained regular online communication. Over time, they engaged in explicit chats and exchanged photos and videos. Acharya later used this content to blackmail the priest, claiming that he intended to undergo gender transition and needed money for the procedure.

Believing this, the priest transferred a total of Rs 10.5 lac to Acharya’s account over the past four months. However, when the priest refused to send more money, Acharya allegedly threatened to release the photos and videos on social media.

Distressed by the threats, the priest lodged a complaint with the Badiadka police on February 5. Acting on the complaint, a team led by Kasargod DySP Sunil Kumar apprehended the accused. Police are also investigating whether Acharya has blackmailed other individuals in a similar manner.
