Holy Family Convent celebrates silver jubilee in Uchagaon, Belagavi

Belagavi, Feb 16: The Holy Family Sisters of Uchagaon, Belagavi, celebrated their silver jubilee on February 15 at St Jude Church, Uchagaon.

The mission of the Holy Family Sisters in Uchagaon began 25 years ago, inspired by the words from the Gospel of Matthew: “Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?” (Mt. 15:33). This thought resonated with the late Sr Pia, the then superior general of the Congregation of the Holy Family of Nazareth Sisters, Sancoale, Goa. Responding to the call of Bishop Bernard Moras, she embarked on a mission to serve the spiritual and physical needs of the people in Uchagaon and surrounding areas.

On August 5, 1999, the Holy Family Sisters arrived in Uchagaon, stepping onto a land rich in soil but thirsting for God’s love and values. The mission began in a small rented house, where the nuns witnessed a deep spiritual hunger among the people and responded with unwavering dedication. Their selfless service significantly impacted the lives of villagers, transcending religious boundaries.

Fr Albert Fernandes msfs, who preached during the jubilee celebration, highlighted the transformative work of the convent. He noted that while modern missionaries often prioritize comfortable accommodations before committing to a place, the Holy Family Sisters embraced the challenges of the region and nurtured a once barren land into a flourishing community.

Over the past 25 years, the nuns have tirelessly served the people of Uchagaon, uplifting them spiritually, morally, and socially. Their journey took them to various sub-stations and villages, where they spread God’s word and strengthened the faith of many. Recognizing the need for education, they established a pre-primary school to provide quality learning opportunities, especially for underprivileged children. Many of these students have since grown into well-educated and successful individuals.

Throughout their mission, the sisters identified and addressed spiritual and social challenges, always trusting in God’s providence. Following the principles of their congregation and the vision of their founder, Fr Faustino De Souza, they remained committed to spreading the Gospel and serving humanity.

The silver jubilee celebration was marked by a thanksgiving Eucharist, presided over by Fr Albert Fernandes msfs, along with 14 other priests. Congregation members who had previously served in the mission also participated, traveling from beyond Goa to offer their prayers and gratitude.

Sr Berna Rodrigues, the superior general of the congregation, was present at the event, providing her support and guidance.

Through their selfless service, the Holy Family Sisters continue to illuminate lives, offering spiritual guidance and hope to the people of Uchagaon. They remain committed to walking alongside the community as pilgrims of hope, inspiring faith and resilience in all they serve.
