Urban bodies need to become economically self-reliant: Mohan Yadav


Bhopal, Feb 18 (IANS) :Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Monday said that urban bodies need to make collective efforts to enhance their income sources to become self-reliant for its schemes for the people.

CM Yadav noted that when urban bodies achieve economic self-reliance, development can be given new momentum, and they would be able to launch their own housing schemes similar to those managed by development authorities.

Chief Minister Yadav made these assertions addressing a virtual meeting of the All India Council of Mayors Madhya Pradesh unit organised in Indore on Monday.

CM Yadav praised the municipal corporations of the state for establishing a unique identity through their development efforts.

He highlighted the rapid pace of holistic development in urban areas, specifically Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) for its outstanding performance in the field of cleanliness.

The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister further said that new dimensions of development have been established in Indore in the past few years and the other urban bodies of the state also need to work on this direction.

CM Mohan Yadav underlined that the city of Indore city is progressing rapidly in the field of development.

"Indore has consistently ranked at the top in the country for cleanliness over the past seven years, and this year, the city continues its strong efforts to maintain its top position. Indore has brought pride to the state," he added.

Madhya Pradesh Urban Development Minister, Kailash Vijayvargiya, who chaired the Mayor's meeting, advised urban bodies to strengthen their taxation systems.

He said that after the 73rd and 74th amendments to the Constitution, the local bodies in Madhya Pradesh have been granted the maximum possible rights.

"New rules (amendments) have been made in a bid to decentralise the local governance system and ensure these bodies receive maximum rights," Vijayvargiya added.
