New Delhi, Feb 20: In a significant boost to local manufacturing, Apple has begun assembling its entire iPhone 16 lineup, including the newly introduced iPhone 16e, in India for both domestic sales and exports. Industry experts clarified on Thursday that the iPhone 16e is not a successor to the now-discontinued iPhone SE, dismissing comparisons between the two models.

The new iPhone 16e features an A18 chip, advanced battery life, Apple Intelligence, and a 48MP dual-function camera system. Designed as an entry-level addition to the iPhone 16 series, the device is being manufactured in India for local consumers and select international markets.

Industry analysts have emphasized that equating the iPhone 16e with the discontinued iPhone SE4 is misleading. The iPhone SE, initially launched as a “Special Edition” with a nostalgic design, once accounted for 16% of total iPhone sales but dwindled to just 1% last year. Neil Shah, Partner and Co-Founder at Counterpoint Research, noted that Apple strategically retired the SE lineup and integrated a new base model within the iPhone 16 series, adapting to changing consumer preferences for larger displays, enhanced cameras, and faster processors.

Experts further highlighted that Apple’s decision helps streamline its product range while reducing design fragmentation. By positioning the iPhone 16e as the most affordable option in the iPhone 16 lineup at $599 in the U.S. and ?59,999 in India, the company aims to deliver the best Apple experience at an accessible price point.
