Mumbai, Feb 21: The Jayaleela Trust, established by the great leader of the Billava community, Jay C Suvarna, has been providing financial aid to eligible research scholars in the Kannada department of Mumbai University since last year.

This year's scholarship distribution ceremony will be held on March 1 at the J P Naik Bhavan of Mumbai University, where the financial aid will be handed over to the scholars. This was announced by Surya Kant Jay Suvarna, the trustee of Jayaleela Trust.

Jay C Suvarna had served as the president of Billawar Association for 21 years, chairman of Bharat Co-operative Bank for 18 years, and president of the National Billava Mahamandala for 24 years, significantly contributing to the upliftment of the Billava community. His contributions in social, economic, educational, and religious fields were remarkable. A man of great compassion, he spent his life supporting those in need, offering assistance wherever possible.

Through the Jayaleela Trust, which he established two decades ago, financial aid ranging from Rs 8 lac to Rs 10 lac is provided every year for education and healthcare without any caste or religious discrimination. Additionally, the trust has taken full responsibility for the education of many children, shaping their future, with many of them now holding prestigious positions in India and abroad. Suvarna carried out such charitable activities discreetly, without seeking recognition.

"It is commendable that the Kannada department of Mumbai University is working towards preserving and promoting Kannada while being based in Maharashtra. It is our privilege to extend support through the Jayaleela Trust," said Surya Kant Jay Suvarna, chairman of Bharat Co-operative Bank, who is dedicatedly continuing his father’s legacy of social service.

At a time when the government and universities are not extending any support to higher education and research in Kannada, the assistance from Surya Kant Jay Suvarna and his family is a promising development. The department is indebted to them, said Prof G N Upadhya, head of the Kannada department at Mumbai University.
