New Delhi, Feb 22: Former RBI governor Shaktikanta Das (Retd IAS: 1980: TN) has been appointed as principal secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His tenure will be co-terminus with that of the Prime Minister or until further orders.
Das will serve alongside Dr P K Mishra, the existing principal secretary to the PM. The appointment marks a key shift in the PMO under the NaMo 2.0 regime, with significant structural changes.

Having completed his extended term as the 25th governor of RBI on December 10, 2024, Das handed over charge to former revenue secretary Sanjay Malhotra (IAS: 1990: RJ), who became the 26th RBI governor. Before his RBI tenure, Das also served as finance secretary designate.
The PMO has undergone notable changes, with the post of secretary, PMO remaining vacant since Bhaskar Khulbe’s extended term ended. Additionally, Amit Khare (Retd IAS: 1985: JH) and Tarun Kapoor (Retd IAS: 1987: HP) are serving as advisers to the PM until June 9, 2026.
Interestingly, Das shares his cadre (Tamil Nadu) with Union Cabinet secretary Dr T V Somanathan (IAS: 1987: TN), highlighting a key administrative connection at the highest level.
