Kolhapur historian receives death threat; case registered against caller

Kolhapur, Feb 26: The Kolhapur police have registered a case against an individual for allegedly issuing death threats to historian Indrajeet Sawant and making derogatory remarks against Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his son Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

According to officials, Sawant, a resident of Kolhapur, received a phone call in the early hours of Tuesday from a caller identifying himself as ‘Prashant Koratkar.’ The caller allegedly threatened to kill Sawant, accusing him of spreading hatred against the Brahmin community. Furthermore, the caller reportedly made disrespectful comments about the revered Maratha warrior king and his son.

Authorities are currently verifying the caller’s identity. Meanwhile, Sawant took to social media, sharing an audio clip of the threatening call, and subsequently approached the Juna Rajwada police station in Kolhapur to file a formal complaint.

Based on his statement, the police have booked the accused under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:

• Section 196 & 197 (promoting enmity or disharmony between groups)

• Section 299 (outraging religious sentiments)

• Section 151 (protecting autonomy and authority of high-ranking officials)

• Section 352 (provocation and insult)

The Kolhapur police have also sought the assistance of the cyber cell to track down the caller and further investigate the case.
