Mangaluru, March 2: Mangala Jyothi, the diocesan biblical, catechetical, and liturgical centre of the diocese of Mangalore, joyfully celebrated the diocesan Catechism Day and felicitation programme at Immaculate Conception Church, Urwa, Mangaluru, on Sunday, March 2. This year’s celebration held special significance as it was also observed as the jubilee of catechists, aligning with the year of jubilee, recognising the dedicated service of catechists in faith formation.
The felicitation programme was conducted at the Urwa Church Centenary Hall, in the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Msgr Maxim L Noronha, vicar general of the diocese of Mangalore, Msgr Leslie Shenoy, parish priest of Urwa Church, Fr Vijay Machado, director of Mangala Jyothi and executive secretary of the CCBI commission for faith formation, Dr Vincent Sequeira, assistant director of Mangala Jyothi and secretary of the bible commission, along with clergy, catechists, students, and faithful.
Other distinguished guests on the dais included Nigel Fernandes, CEO of ATC Publishers, member of the CCBI commission, Anil Rego, CEO of Brilliant Printers, Bengaluru. George Pinto, retd deputy commissioner, excise department.
Faith formation: a lifelong journey
The event commenced with a solemn Eucharistic celebration, presided over by Msgr Maxim L Noronha. In his homily, he emphasised that faith formation is not just for children but an ongoing journey throughout life.
“This entire year, we have been reflecting on the theme, ‘Lord, teach us to pray.’ Faith formation is a continuous process that must be nurtured in families, parishes, and communities. We are called to share the light of faith with others through our words, deeds, and life examples,” he said. He encouraged catechists to persevere in their mission despite modern challenges, ensuring that faith is not only taught but lived.
Inspiring testimonies from students and catechists
During the student-sharing session, two young participants shared their personal experiences of catechism. Melora Vanisha Brags from NSM English Medium School, Omzoor, spoke about how catechism classes have strengthened her relationship with God and shaped her moral values. Christan Deekshith Thoras from Bethany English Medium School, Darbe, Puttur, shared how learning about faith has influenced his daily life, inspiring him to be a better person.
Among the catechists, Mercine Crasta, co-ordinator of Bendur, shared her journey in the mission of catechism. She reflected on the joys and challenges of teaching modern children, acknowledging that while today’s youth face numerous distractions, their spiritual hunger remains strong. She encouraged fellow catechists to embrace innovative methods to keep faith formation engaging and relevant.
Honouring catechetical service and contributions
The felicitation programme featured the honouring of Jubilee Catechists who have devoted their lives to faith education, along with the recognition of essay competition winners, presented by Fr Benjamin and Nigel Fernandes.
A special Jubilee Honours ceremony, led by Msgr Leslie Shenoy, acknowledged distinguished contributors to catechesis through Mangala Jyothi.
Sixty-six students who achieved top scores in the diocesan-level Catechism exam, conducted at the school level, were honoured by Msgr Maxim Noronha and George.
Msgr Maxim L Noronha released the book Way of the Cross and Word of God Reflection, adding valuable resources to catechetical faith education.
A renewed commitment to evangelization
Fr Vijay Machado, director of Mangala Jyothi, reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to strengthening catechetical education and equipping catechists with the tools needed to guide the faithful. The event served as a powerful reminder that faith formation is a lifelong mission, requiring dedication, innovation, and a spirit of evangelisation.
