Mangaluru, Mar 2: The Marine Coastal Survey Division (M & CSD) of GSI, Mangalore, hosted a walkathon on March 2 as part of the historic Pan Indian Walkathon organised by GSI, to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the geological survey of India and its significant contributions to the nation.
The event was held under the theme “Geoscience for a safe world.” The walkathon event was inaugurated by the chief guests Sidharth Goyal, IPS, deputy commissioner of police (L & O), Mangaluru City and Premanandha Shetty, former mayor, corporator, Mangaluru City Corporation in the gracious presence of Dr M N Shareef, DDG, HOD of MCSD, GSI, Mangaluru and other dignitaries such as Anjaneyulu Katari, HO, director, Dr C V Gopalan, director etc.

























The participants congregated at the office premises. The event kicked off with a registration desk where attendees signed up and received event materials such as customised t-shirts, handbags, caps, and other essentials. During the event, Dr M N Shareef, DDG and HOD of MCSD, Mangaluru, delivered the welcome address and highlighted 175 years of geoscientific excellence. Premanandha Shetty, former mayor, corporator, Mangalore city Corporation appreciated GSI’s legacy and excellence.
The chief guest lauded the organisation's ongoing efforts and officially inaugurated the walkathon, flagging off the event. The walkathon commenced from the GSI, Mangalore office premises, following the pre-designated routes passing notable landmarks such as Mangaladevi Circle, Mangaladevi Temple, among others. The participants carried banners to commemorate GSI's 175-year legacy of geoscientific excellence.
The event itinerary was disseminated in advance to ensure widespread awareness. The walk was constantly supervised by the organising committee led by Sarath L G, director, MCSD and local police officers who ensured the safety throughout the event.
The walkathon saw the participation of 160 people including officers, staff members, their families, kids, college students, and members of the public cutting across all age groups. The participation in the Pan Indian Walkathon, organised by GSI, themed "Geoscience for a safe world," truly reflected the spirit of unity, and the event provided a profoundly prideful experience.
Upon completing the full walk along the designated routes, participants returned to the office, where they were provided with light refreshments and were addressed by Anjaneyulu Katari, HO, MCSD, Mangaluru. Mementos are presented to the chief guests and certificate of participation to the participants as a token of appreciation.
Anjaneyulu Katari, director, expressed his gratitude to all the participants, sponsors, and organising committee for their contributions to the success of the event. The whole event was monitored and spearheaded by Dr M N Shareef, DDG, HOD, MCSD, Mangaluru, and head of office Anjaneyulu Katari, with strong support from the technical and administrative sections, as well as the entire team of MCSD, Mangaluru.
