Sirmaur, Mar 2: A youth from Panchkula, Haryana, who went missing while trekking the Churdhar peak in Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district on Mahashivratri (February 26), remains untraceable despite ongoing search efforts.

Himachal Pradesh Industry Minister Harshvardhan Chauhan assured on Sunday that rescue operations are in full swing in the Churdhar valley and expressed confidence that the missing trekker would be located soon. However, he cautioned adventure seekers against undertaking treks in extreme weather conditions, as the region has witnessed heavy rainfall and snowfall in recent days.

According to locals from Nohradhar, three friends from Panchkula began their trek to Churdhar peak on the morning of Mahashivratri despite adverse weather conditions. While two of them successfully reached the summit by evening, their companion, Akshay Sahani (28), son of Anil Sahani, went missing along the route and has not been found since.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mukesh Dadwal stated that a police team, led by an SHO-level officer, was deployed to locate the missing youth. However, search operations have been severely impacted due to inclement weather, with the peak covered in five to seven feet of snow. Rescue teams scoured the region up to Jamuna Nala on Saturday evening but were unable to trace the missing trekker.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Sunil Kayath confirmed that the administration has deployed the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to assist in the search operations.

Authorities have reiterated that trekking to Churdhar peak between December and March-end is strictly prohibited due to hazardous conditions. However, despite warnings, several adventure enthusiasts continue to take risks, often attempting the trek for social media content.

Efforts are ongoing to locate Akshay Sahani, and officials have urged trekkers to prioritize safety and adhere to advisories issued by the district administration.
