Kolkata, Mar 4: A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in south Kolkata on Tuesday when a couple and their young child were found hanging in their residence in the Haltu area, under the Kasba police station, authorities confirmed.

The deceased have been identified as 40-year-old auto-driver Somnath Roy, his 35-year-old wife Sumitra Roy, and their 2.5-year-old son, Rudranil Roy.

Upon receiving the distressing news, a team from the local police station quickly arrived at the scene, recovered the bodies, and sent them for post-mortem examinations. While the initial investigation suggests that the couple took their own lives after hanging their child from the ceiling, the final conclusions will only be drawn after the autopsy reports are completed.

Investigators have recovered a suicide note from the scene, although police are withholding details regarding its contents.

Preliminary findings point to severe financial difficulties as a possible reason behind the couple’s drastic actions. However, law enforcement officials are keeping an open mind, probing all potential angles to determine if any foul play was involved in the incident.

A relative of the deceased mentioned that Somnath Roy had been embroiled in a dispute with another relative over financial issues, and this conflict may have played a role in the family’s tragic decision.

This incident follows a similar case in the Tangra area on Kolkata's eastern outskirts, where three members of the same family—two women and a minor girl—were found dead, victims of a gruesome murder by their husbands, who were brothers. The two men had planned to take their own lives afterward, but their suicide attempt failed when their car crashed, leaving them hospitalized. In this case too, the family's dire financial situation and heavy debt were believed to be contributing factors behind their desperate actions.
