New Delhi, Mar 9: Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Sunday criticized Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed over her contentious statement claiming that Mathematics was introduced to the world through Islam. Singh demanded that Mohamed provide evidence to support her claim.
Speaking to IANS, Singh remarked, "If someone lacks knowledge, I cannot comment on their foolishness. The world knows who the pioneers of Mathematics were. Associating it with religion is meaningless." He further added, "If she believes that Mathematics originated from Islam, she should present evidence and engage in a constructive discussion."
Mohamed’s remarks have triggered controversy, adding to a series of contentious statements she has made recently. Just days ago, she was criticized for allegedly fat-shaming Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma.

In a separate instance, Mohamed had also defended Indian pacer Mohammed Shami when he was criticized by certain Islamic groups for not observing Roza during the Champions Trophy semi-final against Australia. She called Islam a "scientific religion."
The BJP strongly condemned Mohamed’s Mathematics-related statement, with BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya commenting, "It seems she has decided that Rahul Gandhi alone cannot be the only one making absurd statements in the Congress."
The controversy follows another recent social media uproar involving Mohamed. During India's match against New Zealand, she posted, "Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Needs to lose weight! And of course, the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had."
Her remarks led to strong reactions from Rohit Sharma’s supporters, who countered with statistics defending his leadership. The BJP accused the Congress of having an “Emergency-era mindset” through such statements.
Under mounting criticism, Mohamed deleted her controversial comments and related posts. The Congress party later distanced itself from her remarks, instructing her to take them down.
