Reliance Jio joins hands with SpaceX to bring Starlink to India

Mumbai, Mar 12: In a major step toward expanding broadband connectivity, Reliance Jio has signed an agreement with Elon Musk's SpaceX to introduce Starlink’s satellite internet services in India. This announcement comes just a day after rival Bharti Airtel struck a similar deal.

The partnership, however, is contingent on regulatory approvals, as SpaceX is yet to receive authorization from the Indian government to commence Starlink’s operations. Once approved, Jio aims to integrate Starlink’s solutions with its existing broadband services, offering high-speed internet even in India's most remote regions.

Under the pact, Jio will make Starlink equipment available through its retail stores and online platforms, providing installation and activation support. The collaboration will strengthen JioAirFiber and JioFiber, ensuring seamless, affordable connectivity across businesses, enterprises, and rural communities.

Speaking on the development, Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio, said, “Ensuring that every Indian has access to affordable and high-speed broadband remains Jio’s top priority. This collaboration with SpaceX is a transformative step toward achieving that goal.”

Gwynne Shotwell, President & COO of SpaceX, lauded Jio’s commitment, expressing optimism about obtaining the necessary government approvals to launch Starlink services in India.

Despite the excitement, regulatory hurdles remain. While competitors like Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio’s JV with SES have already secured the necessary licenses, SpaceX is still awaiting clearance from IN-SPACe and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

Meanwhile, India’s space sector is witnessing rapid growth, with projections indicating a $44 billion market by 2033. As the government finalizes its spectrum allocation policies, telecom giants like Jio and Airtel continue to push for competitive auctions.

With over 6,000 low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites currently in operation, Starlink is set to play a crucial role in India's digital expansion, ensuring connectivity for even the most remote locations.
