Udupi, Mar 12: A shootout took place in Hiriyadka, Udupi, when the police were transporting arrested notorious criminal Isaac, a most-wanted member of the Garuda gang along with three others. The operation was carried out by Manipal police sub-inspector Devaraj and his team.
Earlier, in a major breakthrough, the Manipal police, along with Malpe sub-division officers and a special team, had arrested notorious criminal Isaac and three others in Channarayapatna, Hassan district, on Tuesday, March 12. The arrests were made in connection with Crime No. 35/25 registered at Manipal police station.

As the accused were being transported to Manipal, the police vehicle stopped near Gudde Angadi in the Hiriyadka police station limits around 7:15 pm after Isaac insisted on urgently relieving himself. However, after stepping out, he suddenly pushed the police personnel accompanying him and attempted to flee using the leading chain attached to his handcuffs.
When two police sub-inspectors tried to restrain him, Isaac forcefully resisted, causing the chain to strike and shatter the windshield of the police vehicle, injuring the officers. Despite repeated warnings by Manipal police inspector Devaraj, Isaac continued his escape attempt. In response, the police fired a warning shot in the air, but as he persisted, he was shot in the leg to prevent his escape.
Isaac and Manipal sub-inspector Devraj, Hiriyadka SI Manjunath, and Udupi town police station personnal Hemanth have been injured in the incident. They have been admitted to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, for treatment.
Isaac was wanted in connection with a robbery case, and the Nelamangala police had been on the lookout for him. During a previous police operation in Manipal, he rammed his jeep into multiple vehicles before fleeing to a deserted area in Mannapalla and abandoning his vehicle.
After an intense search, the police finally traced Isaac after eight days. When he again attempted to escape during the arrest, the police fired at him before taking him into custody.
