Mangaluru, Mar 12: Heavy showers accompanied by thunder and lightning brought much-needed relief from the scorching heat in Dakshina Kannada district, including Mangaluru city, on Wednesday, March 12.
The sudden downpour surprised residents amid looming heatwave threat and heatstroke warnings as the day had remained hot and humid with no signs of rain. There was no prelude to the downpours in the form of clouds either in several locations. However, by evening, the skies opened up, drenching the city. Some parts of Beltangady including Kakkinje, Mundaje and Somnadka even witnessed hailstorms.

While some were caught off guard by the unexpected rain, many had their umbrellas ready as overcast conditions prevailed since morning. Despite the showers, many residents hoped for more substantial rainfall.
The India Meteorological Department had predicted pre-monsoon showers due to a depression in the Bay of Bengal. While rain was expected to begin on March 11 and last until March 12, it was also forecast that showers could start on March 18 across Coastal Karnataka and other parts of the state.
