New Delhi, Mar 17: Former Union Minister and veteran BJP leader Dr Debendra Pradhan passed away on Monday at the official residence of his son, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, in Delhi. He was 84.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep grief, calling Pradhan a ‘popular leader and accomplished parliamentarian’ who dedicated his life to public service. He highlighted Pradhan’s contributions as union minister of State for Surface Transport and Agriculture (1999–2001) and his key role in Odisha's political development.

"Pradhan was instrumental in strengthening the BJP in Odisha and led the party with vision as its state president. His passing is a great loss to the state and the nation," Majhi said, extending condolences to Dharmendra Pradhan and his family.

Leader of opposition Naveen Patnaik also mourned his demise, describing him as a leader with exceptional organisational skills and a humble personality. He recalled Pradhan’s impactful tenure in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s cabinet.

Born on July 16, 1941, in Odisha’s Angul district, Pradhan was a doctor by profession and one of the BJP’s founding leaders in the state. He served as Odisha BJP president twice (1989–1993, 1996–1997) and represented Deogarh in the 13th Lok Sabha (1998–2004).

At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his son Dharmendra Pradhan, daughter-in-law Mridula Pradhan, and wife Basant Manjari Pradhan. Several BJP leaders and ministers expressed their condolences, remembering his lifelong dedication to public service.
