Mangaluru, Mar 18: Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, Mangaluru, has made history by securing the overall championship for the eighth time at the VTU 26th Inter-College State-Level Athletic Championship. The event was held at JNNCE, Shivamogga, from March 15 to 18.
The Sahyadri athletic team emerged as the overall champions with 104 points and also won the men’s section championship and the women’s section championship. Additionally, the team secured second place in the march past.
A total of 1,434 athletes from 126 colleges participated in the competition. Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi, has a total of 201 affiliated colleges with nearly four lakh students.
Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management was established in Mangaluru in 2007-08 under the leadership of MLA Manjunath Bhandary. Since 2008-09, the college has actively participated in VTU’s state-level sports events. Over the years, Sahyadri College has won the overall championship eight times, finished as runner-up five times, and secured third place three times.

No other college in VTU’s history has won the championship as many times as Sahyadri College. The institution has excelled in multiple sports disciplines:

- Weightlifting – Women’s team: 5-time champions, Men’s team: 4-time champions
- Powerlifting – Women’s team: 4-time champions, Men’s team: 2-time champions
- Best physique – 1-time champions
- Swimming – Runners-up 1 time
- Wrestling – 5 medals
- Chess, cricket, hockey, badminton, table tennis – 4-time champions
- All India inter-university participation – 10-14 students participate every year
Sahyadri College, recognized as one of the top institutions in Karnataka, has consistently produced high-ranking students and excelled in placements. The highest salary package offered to its students stands at Rs 48 lac, showcasing the institution's academic excellence.
The college prioritizes both sports and skill development along with academics.
