BJP MLA Sunil Kumar slams Cong govt, alleges rising lawlessness in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Mar 20: The Karnataka BJP launched a scathing attack on the Congress-led state government, accusing it of failing to support the police force and instead favouring lawbreakers.

Speaking in the Assembly under 'Rule 69', BJP MLA and state general secretary V Sunil Kumar questioned the efficiency of the Home Department, raising concerns over rising criminal activities and the government’s inaction.

"The law and order situation in Karnataka is deteriorating. The home minister seems unaware of ground realities. Have the police become ineffective, or have criminal elements gained the upper hand? The state government appears to have turned a blind eye to the attacks on police personnel," he said.

Citing the recent Udayagiri police station attack in Mysuru over an objectionable social media post, Sunil Kumar alleged that law enforcement was unable to act promptly. "Police vehicles were vandalized, attempts were made to set fire, and rioters acted with impunity. If similar incidents in DJ Halli, KG Halli, and Hubballi are considered, it is evident that social media posts are being used as an excuse for violence," he stated.

Accusing the government of selective action, he remarked, "If Hindus reacted to every provocation, similar incidents would occur daily. One section of society is crossing all limits, while the state remains indifferent."

Sunil Kumar further criticized the administration for its handling of criminal cases, alleging that officers are being prevented from taking firm action. "The police are restrained, while criminals roam freely. Karnataka is no longer police-friendly; it has become a haven for rioters," he asserted.

Referring to the gang rape of an Israeli tourist in Hampi, he questioned the government's failure to ensure safety at an international heritage site. "The state's reputation has taken a severe hit. How could such an incident happen in a globally recognized destination?" he asked.

He also expressed disappointment over the alleged side-lining of cases concerning Hindu sentiments and the increasing cases of cyber fraud, which have even led to suicides among victims.

Countering the allegations, state rural development and panchayati raj minister Priyank Kharge accused the BJP of stoking communal sentiments. "Why does the BJP always bring up Hindu-Muslim issues? What about the Paresh Mesta case, which was investigated by the CBI and found to have no foul play?" he questioned.

Sunil Kumar, however, maintained that the state must act decisively against criminal activities. "In Bengaluru, anti-social elements roam the streets wielding swords. The government must ensure law enforcement regains control," he demanded.

The debate highlighted the deep political divide over Karnataka’s law and order situation, with both parties standing firm on their positions.
