Mangaluru, Mar 20: The district administration has issued a conditional order under the Bharatiya Nagarika Suraksha Samhita to curb illegal sand mining on private land near the Phalguni river in Mulooru Tiruvail and Kandavara villages.

Mangaluru Sub-divisional magistrate Harshavardhan S J has directed an immediate halt to unauthorized sand extraction, storage, and transportation from agricultural land near the river. Additionally, he has ordered a temporary suspension of vehicular movement in the area, including tractors, tippers, trucks, and other machinery used for illegal mining, until further notice.

The order follows reports that large-scale illegal sand mining was being carried out using heavy machinery without obtaining permission from the department of mines and geology. This activity has reportedly caused inconvenience to the public, erosion of riverbanks, environmental degradation, and damage to public infrastructure. Acting on these concerns, Harshavardhan conducted an inspection and subsequently issued the order.
