Mangaluru/Udupi, Mar 21: The SSLC annual examinations for the academic year commenced on Friday March 21, with a total of 29,760 students registered in Dakshina Kannada district. The exams are being conducted across 92 centers, utilizing 1,332 classrooms, with all necessary arrangements in place to ensure smooth administration. The exams will continue until April 4.

Out of the total candidates, 28,446 students are appearing for the first time. Additionally, 831 private candidates, 259 repeaters, and 217 private repeaters will also be writing the exams. Among the first-time examinees, 14,735 are boys and 13,711 are girls.

To maintain security and transparency, CCTV surveillance has been implemented in all examination centers. A total of 1,678 cameras have been installed in the 1,332 classrooms designated for the exams. The examination process is being overseen by 2,057 officials and staff. To ensure the safe transportation of question papers from the treasury, 34 police personnel have been deployed, while 184 police officers have been assigned to maintain security at the examination centers.

In terms of zonal distribution of candidates, Bantwal has 6,007 candidates, Beltangady 4,204, Mangaluru North 5,443, Mangaluru South 5,182, Moodbidri 2,006, Puttur 4,926, and Sullia 1,992.

Udupi district has a total of 14,153 registered candidates, including 13,798 new students. Among them, 7,152 are boys and 6,646 are girls. The exams are being conducted across 51 centers, utilizing 590 classrooms. To ensure transparency and security, CCTV cameras have been installed in all examination centers and classrooms. Additionally, 12 officials have been assigned for webcasting surveillance, while three district-level security teams and seven special task forces—one per taluk—have been deployed to oversee the examination process.

The first paper of the SSLC board examination began at 10 AM, with 272 schools from Udupi district taking part. Adequate arrangements for water, ORS, and first aid were made at each examination center. Students entered the examination halls while following all rules and regulations. The question papers were handed out to the students promptly. Parents extended their best wishes to their children.

On the first day, students will write their First Language paper. Most Kannada-medium students will have Kannada as their subject, while students from other mediums will write their respective language papers. The district administration, zilla panchayat, and the department of school education and literacy have taken all necessary measures to ensure that students can write their exams without any disruptions.

Examination centers have displayed registration numbers along with classroom details outside the premises for students' convenience. Additionally, desks inside the exam halls have been marked with students’ registration numbers.

A prohibition order has been enforced within a 200-meter radius of the exam centers, and photocopy shops will remain closed during the exams. Except for students and exam staff, no other individuals will be allowed inside the centers. Students can avail of free travel on KSRTC buses by presenting their exam hall tickets, and KSRTC officials have been directed to operate buses on schedule.

Certain items have been strictly prohibited inside the examination hall to maintain security and fairness. Students are not allowed to wear clothing that conceals their identity. Metal or non-transparent water bottles are also banned. Electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets, pen drives, Bluetooth devices, smartwatches, and calculators are strictly prohibited. Additionally, students cannot carry log tables, handbags, purses, notes, torches, or any recording devices. Candidates wearing hearing aids will be subjected to special screening before entering the exam hall.
