Udupi: Spandana Trophy 2025: A celebration of sportsmanship and solidarity

Udupi, Mar 22: The Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) in co-ordination with air condition department successfully hosted the third season of the Spandana Trophy, a tennis ball cricket and throwball tournament on February 15 and 16 at MIT Ground, Manipal. This event was dedicated to support the children undergoing cancer treatment at Access Life Centre, Manipal to spread joy, encouragement and hope through sports.

The tournament began with a grand inaugural function on February 15, attended by esteemed dignitaries. Lt Gen (Dr) M D Venkatesh VSM (Retd), vice chancellor of MAHE, expressed that sports have the power to bring people together and inspire hope, emphasizing that the Spandana Trophy is a testament to the institution’s commitment in making a difference in the lives of young cancer warriors. Dr Anand Venugopal, chief operating officer of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, and Dr Raviraja N S, chief operating officer of MAHE also graced the occasion.

Advisor to MAHE, C G Muthanna was also present along with Dr Vasudeva Bhat, HOD of paediatric Haemato oncology, Kasturba Hospital who provided an insightful overview of Paediatric Oncology and the pivotal role played by Kasturba Hospital in supporting young cancer patients.

Lt Gen (Dr) M D Venkatesh VSM (Retd) shared, "The Spandana Trophy is more than just a sporting event; it is a symbol of resilience, unity and compassion. It showcases the power of sports in fostering hope and bringing communities together for a noble cause. Seeing these young warriors battle their challenges with such determination is truly inspiring. MAHE remains deeply committed to leveraging the power of sports to uplift lives and we are honoured to contribute to such a meaningful initiative."

Dr Raviraja N S remarked - "Events like the Spandana Trophy highlight the power of collective effort and compassion. Beyond the game, this tournament serves as a beacon of encouragement for children fighting cancer. The courage and determination displayed by these young fighters remind us about all of the importance of extending our support. Through sports, we foster teamwork, resilience and the unwavering spirit to overcome adversity. MAHE takes pride in being part of this noble cause and we will continue to stand with these children in their journey toward recovery."

The tournament was a vibrant and heartwarming occasion with children undergoing treatment at Kasturba Hospital attending alongside players, faculty and senior management staff from MAHE and Kasturba Hospital. Their presence added deep meaning and significance to the event, reinforcing the spirit of resilience and unity.

The Spandana Trophy successfully raised Rs 10 lacs, which will be utilised to treat children battling cancer at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, contributed directly towards supporting paediatric cancer treatment, ensuring better healthcare and resources for affected children. This achievement reflects the generosity and commitment of the MAHE community towards social causes.
