Mangaluru, Mar 26: Drug peddlers primarily target the youth, with students forming a major portion of their customer base. As a result, many educational institutions have become hotspots for drug activity.

The growing trend of students falling into drug addiction has become a serious concern. According to police officers, drug awareness activists, de-addiction counselors, and mental health experts working with addicts, a significant number of parents remain unaware of the issue. Despite the formation of 'Anti-Drugs Cells' in schools and colleges to curb drug abuse, many of these units remain inactive.

530 anti-drugs cells set up

In an effort to make Dakshina Kannada a drug-free district, the district administration has mandated the establishment of 'Anti-Drugs Cells' in all high schools and colleges. As per this initiative, 530 institutions, including 1 B Ed college, 34 degree colleges, 16 engineering colleges, 1 law college, 61 pre-university colleges, and 417 high schools, now have such cells. However, authorities stress the need to make these units more effective.

Who is part of the Anti-Drugs Cell?

Each unit is headed by the principal or headmaster, with a senior faculty member serving as the secretary. The cell includes a female faculty member, student welfare officer, counselor, chief hostel warden, NCC/NSS/YRC coordinators, student union president, parent representative, and a security officer.

40% of users are female students

Drug consumption is prevalent among both male and female students. Experts estimate that around 40% of users are young women. Despite the existence of Anti-Drugs Cells, many parents remain unaware of their children’s drug habits. Even when they do find out, they often choose to remain silent due to concerns about their child’s future. Early intervention through counseling and treatment can help, whereas hiding the issue can have severe consequences, warn de-addiction counselors.

Don’t hide addiction cases

"Most educational institutions have Anti-Drugs Cells, and awareness programs are conducted regularly. As per the district administration’s directive, every government and private school and college has access to counselors. Nodal officers have been trained, and counseling centers have been set up in taluk hospitals and community health centers. Greater cooperation from educational institutions, management, and parents is essential. If drug addiction is identified, it should not be concealed—timely treatment is crucial," said Dr Sudarshan, district mental health program officer.
