Hyderabad, Mar 30: A heart-wrenching tragedy struck Venkatapur village in Telangana’s Kamareddy district when a woman and her three young children drowned in a lake on Saturday afternoon. The incident, which took place in Yellareddy mandal, about 140 km from Hyderabad, only came to light on Sunday.

According to police, the mishap occurred when the woman, identified as 26-year-old Mounika, was washing clothes by the lake while her children entered the water for a bath. Unaware of a deep pit within the lake, the children—Maithili (10), Akshara (8), and Vinay (7)—began to drown. Seeing them struggle, Mounika immediately rushed to their aid but was unable to save them and tragically drowned along with them.

Initially, there was speculation that the woman may have taken her own life along with her children. However, a police investigation ruled out suicide, revealing that the family had gone to the lake for routine chores. The children’s clothes, neatly placed on the shore before entering the water, remained untouched, further supporting the accidental drowning theory.

Mounika’s husband, Lingaiah, a daily wage laborer, was away at work when the incident occurred. Upon returning home and realizing his wife and children were missing, he inquired with neighbors and learned they had gone to the lake. Rushing to the spot, he found only their clothes on the shore, sparking a desperate search effort by villagers.

By Sunday morning, their lifeless bodies were seen floating in the water. Local authorities arrived at the scene, retrieved the bodies, and sent them for post-mortem examination.

The tragic loss of an entire family has cast a pall of gloom over Venkatapur village, leaving the community in deep shock and mourning.
