Udupi, Mar 31: Emphasizing the importance of values in leadership, the bishop of the Udupi diocese, Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, stated that when leaders uphold strong values and contribute positively to society, people naturally accept and follow them. He highlighted that the cooperative sector provides an excellent platform for fostering leadership qualities while working collaboratively with the community.

He was speaking at an event organized by the Catholic Sabha Udupi Pradesh at Kakunje Anugraha Pastoral Centre on Sunday. The programme honored Christian leaders serving as presidents, vice presidents, and directors in the cooperative sector.

Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo praised the contributions of numerous Christian leaders who have taken up director roles in cooperative institutions, noting that they play a crucial role in directly addressing the needs of society. He also stressed the importance of unity among Christian co-operators and suggested forming a federation of Christian cooperatives to enhance collective efforts.

The event was inaugurated by Anil Lobo, president of MCC Bank, Mangaluru, who remarked that while the cooperative sector might seem easy from the outside, working within it is challenging. Unlike nationalized banks, cooperative institutions do not receive the same level of support, yet they continue to serve people diligently. He added that working in the cooperative sector brings self-satisfaction as it is ultimately a service to society.

MLC Ivan D’Souza provided insights on strengthening the Christian community’s presence in the cooperative sector.

During the event, newly elected presidents, vice presidents, and directors of various cooperative institutions within the Udupi diocese were felicitated.

The programme was presided over by Santosh Cornelio, president of the Catholic Sabha Udupi Pradesh. Also present were Msgr Ferdinand Gonsalves, spiritual director of the Catholic Sabha Udupi Pradesh, newly elected Central Committee president Ronald D’Almeida, former president Mary D’Souza, and other dignitaries.

L Roy Kiran Crasta welcomed the gathering and delivered introductory remarks, general secretary Olivia J D’Mello delivered the vote of thanks. Dr Gerald Pinto compered the event.
