Sribhumi, Apr 2: A 22-year-old woman was brutally assaulted and thrown by the roadside in Assam’s Sribhumi after she fought off two men who allegedly attempted to sexually assault her on a private bus, her father said on Wednesday.

The young woman, an aspiring civil servant, had boarded an orange-colored private bus from Badarpur on Tuesday afternoon but sensed danger and tried to get off moments later. However, the two men on board didn’t allow her to leave.

“They tried to rape her, and when she resisted, they attacked her viciously. She was slapped, punched, and kicked inside the moving bus. They even tried to strangle her before dumping her near Chargola,” her father recounted.

She had gone to the circle office in Badarpur to collect documents and called her father at 4:50 pm, informing him she was on her way home. “Half an hour later, she called again, crying for help. She sent her location via WhatsApp, and we found her unconscious by the roadside,” he said.

The victim was rushed to Sribhumi Civil Hospital with police assistance. “She has suffered both internal and external injuries, but more than that, she is mentally devastated,” her father added.

Sribhumi SP Partha Pratim Das confirmed that a case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and two suspects, including the driver, have been detained. “Prima facie, it appears to be a case of physical assault, but we are investigating further,” he said.

The bus was identified using CCTV footage from a nearby area, and the victim’s statement will be recorded soon. “We are confident of uncovering more details during the investigation,” the SP added.

The police have withheld the identities of the suspects as the probe continues.
