Mangaluru, Apr 4: Thick smoke engulfed the road due to a fire in a hilly area, leading to a head-on collision between two buses near the women's hostel of Mangalore University on Thursday, April 3 afternoon.

A private bus traveling from Konaje to Mangaluru and a BIT College bus heading towards Inoli collided head-on, causing minor injuries to both drivers and some passengers.

The fire broke out in the hilly area near Konaje University, burning trees and shrubs, which resulted in heavy smoke covering the surroundings. Flames and smoke along the road created visibility issues for motorists. Amidst this, the drivers of the two approaching buses failed to see each other, resulting in the collision. The front sections of both buses were severely damaged in the accident.

For the past two days, fires have been raging in the hilly area within the Mangalore University campus, destroying hundreds of trees. Firefighters later arrived at the scene and attempted to extinguish the blaze.

I was present when the accident occurred. There was a fire nearby on the university campus, and the fire brigade did not arrive for 2.5 hours. In the meantime, the fire raged and spread over more than a kilometer. It was only after the accident happened that the fire brigade arrived to put it out. The accident was caused by the combination of thick smoke from the fire and the reckless driving of the 51-number Manjanady bus. There was also a fire in the same area the day before yesterday. The fire brigade charges the person who calls them to report a fire. As a result, people are now reluctant to call the fire brigade. They act as if it’s not their responsibility to put out fires on government land.
