Maine, Apr 4: A shocking incident unfolded in the central Maine town of Sabattus on Wednesday afternoon, where a 29-year-old man fatally shot his mother before randomly targeting passing vehicles, leaving one motorist dead, two others injured, and eventually taking his own life, according to Maine State Police.

The accused, identified as James Davis III of Sabattus, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by his mother, Christine Smith, 47, also of Sabattus. Davis reportedly shot his mother while she was driving, causing the vehicle to come to a stop. He then exited the car and opened fire on passing vehicles, police confirmed.

Among the victims was Katherine Williams, 53, a resident of Sabattus, who was fatally shot and later pronounced dead at Central Maine Medical Center. Williams, a beloved kitchen manager at two schools in Litchfield, was remembered by Superintendent Katherine Grondin for her kindness and dedication.

The two others injured were Tyson Turner, 19, of Jay, and David Wilson, 35, of Hartford. Both were transported to Central Maine Medical Center and are expected to survive, authorities said.

Maine State Police Col. William Ross mentioned that Davis had been acting erratically earlier in the day at his father’s house and was armed with multiple firearms, including a .357 revolver and an AK-style rifle. Family members tried to contact Smith, Davis’s primary caregiver, who usually managed to calm him during erratic episodes. Tragically, their meeting ended with Smith’s death.

According to Ross, Davis’s actions after killing his mother appeared random, with no prior connection to his victims. “A very dynamic scene involving a mother and an adult child. So it has a domestic undertone to it. Then you have random acts of violence at people that James Davis III did not know,” he stated.

Police have begun an extensive investigation into the tragedy, with autopsies scheduled for the deceased at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta. Authorities also confirmed that they had no prior contact or history with Davis.

As the community mourns the loss of Katherine Williams and the tragic events surrounding the incident, police continue their investigation to understand what triggered the devastating rampage
