Kakinada, Apr 6: Panic has gripped Pallam village in Katrenikona mandal of Andhra Pradesh's Konaseema district after several residents tested positive for Hepatitis B and C, prompting health authorities to launch emergency measures.

With a population of around 15,000, the village has witnessed an unusual spike in Hepatitis cases, according to diagnostic reports from labs in Kakinada, Amalapuram, and nearby areas. The alarming trend has triggered a mass screening drive led by the district administration.

Konaseema officials confirmed that out of the over 6,000 adults in the village, rapid blood tests were conducted on 2,200 residents in the past week alone. Of these, 205 tested positive for either Hepatitis B or C. All of them have been referred to the district hospital in Amalapuram for confirmatory ELISA tests and further treatment.

District Collector Mahesh Kumar said that the administration is on high alert and is taking all necessary steps to contain the virus. “The health of the people is our top priority. We are monitoring the situation closely,” he assured.

Medical experts emphasized the need for swift preventive measures, especially since there is no vaccine available for Hepatitis C. While a vaccine exists for Hepatitis B, both infections pose serious risks if left untreated — potentially leading to liver damage or failure.

Doctors underscored the importance of early detection and regular monitoring. “Timely diagnosis is crucial to avoid long-term complications,” they said.

However, health workers are facing hurdles as some villagers are reportedly hesitant to undergo testing. Authorities have urged the public to cooperate fully with the medical teams and safeguard their health and that of their families.

Mass screenings will continue across Pallam to ensure early intervention and reduce the risk of further spread.
