Mangaluru, Apr 7: The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) at St Lawrence Church and Shrine, Bondel, joyfully celebrated Senior Citizens' Day on Sunday, April 6.
The Eucharistic celebration began at 11 am and was presided over by bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, along with parish priest Fr Andrew Leo D'Souza and retired former parish priest Fr Denis D'Souza as concelebrants.

The liturgy was beautifully led by senior citizens and SVP members, while the church choir, joined by SVP members, enhanced the solemnity of the occasion with their melodious singing.
Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, in his heartfelt homily, emphasized the themes of love, mercy, and forgiveness, reminding the faithful that in this Jubilee Year, all are pilgrims preparing to encounter Jesus. Quoting Pope Francis, he urged the congregation to reach out to those who have strayed, welcome them back, and restore their dignity in society. He also highlighted the invaluable role of senior citizens, describing them as a source of joy and a blessing within the family.
A short cultural programme commenced immediately after the Mass, beginning with a prayerful request for blessings from the bishop, parish priest, former parish priest, and elders.
Ronald Lasrado officially inaugurated the event, followed by Naveen Correa, who extended a traditional welcome by offering panpod and udak as gestures of hospitality. Neris Dias, president of SVP, warmly welcomed the gathering.
Dignitaries graced the dais and were received with great admiration and respect from the audience. Each guest was welcomed with warmth and elegance, as SVP members honoured them with a bouquet of flowers—a symbol of gratitude and appreciation.
The dais was graced by Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, Fr Andrew Leo D'Souza (parish priest), Fr William D'Souza (assistant parish priest), Fr Peter Gonsalves, Fr Denis D'Souza (retired former parish priest), John D'Silva (vice president, parish pastoral council), Santhosh Misquith (secretary, parish pastoral council), Neris Dias (president, SVP), and others.
