Tech trio from SMVITM revolutionize food storage with intelligent IoT inventory system

Media Release

Udupi, Apr 10: The IoT-based smart inventory management system is an innovative solution designed to enhance the efficiency and security of food storage facilities. Developed by final-year students from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management (SMVITM), Bantakal, this system leverages RFID technology, an ESP8266 microcontroller, and environmental sensors to automate inventory tracking and monitor storage conditions in real-time. The project, undertaken by Anagha Bhat S, Ananya K, and B Chaithra under the guidance of Arun Upadhyaya, assistant professor (selection grade), aims to improve food safety, reduce waste, and simplify inventory management.

The system efficiently tracks inventory by recording essential details such as item names, arrival dates, manufacturing dates, and expiration dates, which are securely stored in Google Sheets for real-time access and updates. It also monitors critical environmental parameters, including temperature, humidity, gas concentration, and fire hazards, ensuring optimal storage conditions to prevent food spoilage. To further enhance reliability, the system features an automated alert mechanism that sends email notifications when storage conditions become unsafe or when items near expiration, allowing facility managers to take timely action.

Beyond improving efficiency, this IoT-driven system contributes to sustainability by minimizing food wastage and reducing energy consumption. Its ability to provide real-time insights into inventory status helps facility managers optimize resource utilization and make informed decisions. By integrating automation, security, and real-time analytics, this cost-effective and smart inventory management solution modernizes food storage practices, ensuring high standards of food safety and quality while promoting sustainable management.

The principal and management of SMVITM have commended and congratulated the students for their innovative projects, recognizing their valuable contribution to society.
