Mumbai terror accused Tahawwur Rana lands in Delhi after US extradition

New Delhi, Apr 10: Tahawwur Hussain Rana, accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, arrived in New Delhi on Thursday following his extradition from the United States. A multi-agency Indian team had flown to the US earlier this week and escorted him back on a special chartered flight that touched down in the capital around 2:39 pm.

Rana, 64, is expected to be placed in a high-security ward inside Tihar Jail. He is a Pakistan-born Canadian national and a close associate of David Coleman Headley (alias Daood Gilani), one of the key conspirators of the 26/11 attacks.

The Indian government has appointed senior advocate Narender Mann as the Special Public Prosecutor to handle the trial in this high-profile case registered by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Rana’s extradition marks a major diplomatic and legal victory for India. His final bid to avoid being sent back collapsed when the US Supreme Court dismissed his plea, paving the way for Indian authorities to bring him back.

Before his extradition, Rana had been housed at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Los Angeles while he pursued multiple legal avenues to prevent his return to India.
