Varanasi, Apr 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday underscored the transformative power of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, calling it a “guarantee of dignity” for senior citizens as he handed over Ayushman Vaya Vandana Cards to elderly beneficiaries during a massive public gathering in his parliamentary constituency.

“The smile of satisfaction on the faces of our elders is the biggest achievement of this scheme,” PM Modi said, recalling the emotional moments during the card distribution.

Addressing the people of Purvanchal, the Prime Minister spoke of the radical shift in the region’s healthcare landscape, stating, “There was a time when getting treatment for elders was a source of worry for every family. But today, Kashi is evolving into a health capital.”

Modi hailed the fact that top-tier medical services, previously accessible only in Delhi and Mumbai, are now reaching the doorstep of rural India. “This is what true development means—when facilities come to the people,” he remarked.

Emphasising the impact of Ayushman Bharat, he called the scheme a “boon for the poor”, adding that it delivers not just treatment, but also trust and dignity. In Varanasi alone, close to 50,000 Vaya Vandana cards have been issued so far, entitling those above 70 years of age, regardless of income, to free treatment.

“When you gave us your blessings for the third time, we pledged to serve you better. The Vaya Vandana Yojana is our promise in action,” the Prime Minister said, assuring people, “Now you don't have to worry about medical expenses—the government is here to support you.”

Empowering women through dairy

The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to laud the remarkable contribution of women animal keepers in Purvanchal, highlighting their role in transforming the rural economy.

He credited Banas Dairy for empowering thousands of women under the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ initiative, saying, “Women here are becoming examples of self-reliance and prosperity. Through Banas, many have become ‘Lakhpati Didis’. This is a silent revolution.”

India’s emergence as the world’s largest milk producer, he said, is a tribute to the tireless efforts of farmers and animal keepers. “We have strengthened the dairy sector with Kisan Credit Cards, easier loans, and infrastructure,” he added.

Modi also mentioned animal vaccination programmes and the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, aimed at modernising the dairy economy and supporting indigenous cattle breeds. “We want to integrate our animal keepers into the mainstream of India’s development story,” he noted.

Major infrastructure push in Varanasi

Marking his 50th visit to his Lok Sabha constituency, the Prime Minister also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 44 development projects worth Rs 3,880 crore. These projects span urban infrastructure, rural amenities, and connectivity, and are expected to significantly enhance public services across Varanasi.

With healthcare reform, women’s empowerment, and massive infrastructure investments forming the crux of his Varanasi address, PM Modi showcased a vision of development rooted in dignity, trust, and inclusion.
