US judge approves deportation of pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil

Daijiworld Media Network – New York

New York, Apr 12: US judge has ruled that Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate and pro-Palestinian activist, can be deported, citing foreign policy concerns. Khalil, a permanent US resident, was detained on March 8 over his participation in protests against the Gaza war, although he has not been charged with any crime.

The ruling is based on a Cold War-era law allowing deportation if a person’s presence is seen as harmful to US foreign interests. Khalil’s legal team plans to appeal, arguing that the decision infringes on free speech.

The Trump administration has justified the deportation, claiming Khalil’s actions pose a threat to American foreign policy and Jewish students’ safety. Civil rights groups have condemned the ruling as politically motivated, pointing to the lack of evidence of any criminal activity. Khalil has also filed a lawsuit challenging his detention as unconstitutional.

The case highlights ongoing debates about free speech, student activism, and US foreign policy.
