Louisiana, Apr 13: A festive weekend at the annual Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival in Louisiana was marred by gunfire on Saturday evening, leaving two people injured and prompting an early closure of the event.

According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office, one victim sustained a serious abdominal injury and remains hospitalized, while another was treated for a graze wound. The shooting occurred during the early hours of Saturday night, abruptly halting what had been a lively celebration in downtown Ponchatoula.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), authorities confirmed the festival’s early shutdown, citing public safety concerns. “Sheriff Daniel Edwards, TPSO personnel, and over a dozen partnering agencies remain on-site, patrolling festival grounds and nearby areas to ensure the safety of all attendees,” the statement read.

The Sheriff's Office expressed its concern for the injured victims and made clear its intention to pursue those responsible. “While we pray for the recovery of those injured, we vow to hold accountable those responsible for ruining what has, so far, been an exceptional weekend,” the message continued.

Despite the incident, officials urged the public not to let the violence overshadow the spirit of the event. “We hope Sunday’s visitors continue with their plans. We ask everyone to remain patient, respectful, and mindful of the many families and children looking to enjoy this beloved tradition,” the Sheriff's Office added.

Festival organizers echoed the sentiment, confirming that the event would resume on Sunday with revised operating hours and increased security. “Due to an unfortunate incident that occurred on our grounds and for the safety of our guests, the festival closed early tonight,” organizers said in a statement. “We are grateful to the Ponchatoula Police, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office, and the multiple supporting agencies for their swift and effective response.”

Sunday's schedule will begin with a 9 a.m. church service, followed by the reopening of festival rides at 10 a.m. To ensure safety, the event will wrap up earlier than originally planned, concluding at 5 p.m. instead of 7 pm.

“We invite everyone to enjoy the final day with delicious food prepared by our non-profits and to take in the beautiful weather in Memorial Park,” organizers added.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, with law enforcement pledging strict action against the individuals involved.
