Mumbai, Apr 14: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday underscored the pivotal role of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar in uniting Mumbai with Maharashtra during India’s linguistic reorganisation of states, describing the city’s bond with the state as “inseparable.”

Speaking at the unveiling of a life-size statue of Dr. Ambedkar in Mumbai, Fadnavis highlighted the enduring influence of Ambedkar’s vision and philosophy in shaping not just Maharashtra, but modern India. “Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s emphatic assertion — ‘Mumbai belongs to Maharashtra’ — still echoes with power today,” the Chief Minister said. “The foundation of a united Maharashtra, with Mumbai at its heart, was built on his ideology.”

Fadnavis also spotlighted the upcoming grand memorial to Dr. Ambedkar being constructed at Indu Mill, calling it a tribute befitting the legacy of the architect of the Indian Constitution. “The Constitution gifted to us by Babasaheb is the most comprehensive and progressive in the world. It laid the groundwork for India's rise on the global stage,” he said.

He noted that the statue unveiled is incomplete without acknowledging the monumental work Ambedkar did in drafting the Constitution. “It wasn’t just a legal document—it was a revolutionary framework that ensured justice, dignity, and equal rights for every citizen, especially the oppressed and marginalised,” Fadnavis stated.

He traced several landmark moments in Ambedkar’s life to Mumbai—from the celebration of his matriculation to his return from the Round Table Conferences and the drafting of the Constitution. “Mumbai was a backdrop for many of Babasaheb’s defining moments—his public recognitions, the launch of his books, political milestones, and even his 50th birthday tribute at Chaityabhoomi,” the CM added.

Describing Dr. Ambedkar as “the voice of the oppressed,” Fadnavis said Ambedkar’s unwavering commitment to social justice continues to inspire generations.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to Ambedkar’s vision, Fadnavis said, “Every action we take as a government is guided by the Constitution. It reflects Babasaheb’s profound knowledge of every domain—from law and economics to history and philosophy. There’s no way to fully repay what he has done for this nation. All we can do is continue to uphold and follow the Constitution he gave us.”
