Lucknow, Apr 15: Uttar Pradesh Tourism Minister and BJP leader Jaiveer Singh on Tuesday lashed out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of deliberately stoking communal tensions for political mileage ahead of her scheduled meeting with Muslim religious leaders over the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025.
“She is setting the fire herself and then trying to extinguish it,” Singh told, questioning why such controversies only arise in Opposition-ruled states. CM Banerjee is set to meet imams, muezzins, and Muslim scholars on April 16 to address growing concerns over the Waqf Act a move the BJP has condemned as an act of minority appeasement.

Singh also criticised Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh for questioning the administration’s approval of DJ-led processions near mosques, following a recent stone-pelting incident in Guna, Madhya Pradesh. “There are traditional ways of conducting processions, and the administration must ensure proper arrangements. But such issues stem from appeasement politics, particularly in states like West Bengal,” he remarked.
The BJP leader further targeted Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Lal Suman over his controversial comments at a recent gathering in Agra. Suman, ahead of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav’s visit on April 19, had referred to the Karni Sena as a “fake army” and questioned their lineage, triggering strong reactions. “Where is Agra — Pakistan or China?” Singh asked. “Akhilesh is free to visit any part of the state, but such remarks clearly indicate a planned political conspiracy.”
Singh alleged that SP was attempting to polarise voters, with Akhilesh Yadav trying to win over disillusioned Dalit and Muslim voters amid a crumbling Opposition alliance and a weakening BSP.
“Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, and their allies are playing with fire. Such divisive politics will only backfire,” Singh warned.
