Gurugram, Apr 16: In a major crackdown against traffic violations, the Gurugram Traffic Police issued a staggering 61,602 challans amounting to Rs 5.19 cr in fines during a month-long drive against wrong-side and unruly driving from March 1 to 31.

According to DCP (Traffic) Virender Vij, the action was primarily focused on violations occurring along key corridors, including National Highway-48, its service lanes, Gurugram-Faridabad Road, and Gurugram-Sohna Road.

“To ensure discipline on roads and prevent accidents, the Gurugram Traffic Police took strict action against wrong-side and lane violations,” said Vij.

In addition to penalizing errant lane violators, the police also targeted noise pollution caused by modified silencers. A total of 80 challans, worth Rs 80 lac, were issued specifically against bike riders predominantly Royal Enfield Bullet owners who had installed illegal silencers or used pressure horns.

Officials explained that many of these violations involve a stunt known as ‘Silencer Blast,’ wherein riders manipulate the engine to create firecracker-like sounds. This act falls under Section 120 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules and Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act.

“Such stunts pose a serious threat to road safety and public peace. The police are committed to making city roads safer by penalizing reckless behavior that endangers lives,” an official said.

The Traffic Police emphasized that a significant number of road mishaps stem from not driving in one’s lane, wrong-side driving, and abrupt lane changes all of which will remain under strict surveillance.

The department has urged Gurugram residents to practice responsible driving and adhere to traffic rules, adding that such enforcement campaigns will continue to ensure safer roads in the city.
