Beirut, Apr 16: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun spoke with Jordanian King Abdullah II on Wednesday, expressing Lebanon’s commitment to cooperate in the investigation of a recently exposed missile manufacturing cell in Jordan.
According to a statement from the Lebanese Presidency, Aoun has directed justice minister Adel Nassar to coordinate with his Jordanian counterpart to ensure smooth information sharing and support from Lebanese judicial and security agencies.
The call follows a major announcement by Jordan’s General Intelligence Directorate, which revealed the arrest of 16 individuals involved in plots to undermine national security and incite chaos in the Kingdom. Authorities say the group was involved in illegally producing rockets and drones using both local and imported components.
Jordan Television reported that members of the cell had travelled to Lebanon to coordinate with a key figure and receive training for their operations, raising regional security concerns.
The plots, reportedly monitored since 2021, also involved possession of explosives, a concealed ready-to-use missile, and the recruitment and overseas training of operatives. All suspects have now been referred to the State Security Court for prosecution, according to Petra news agency.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, in a separate call with his Jordanian counterpart on Tuesday, reassured that Lebanon would not serve as a base for activities that threaten the peace or security of any "brotherly or friendly" nation.
The development underscores heightened regional vigilance as both Beirut and Amman move to contain cross-border threats and ensure security cooperation amid rising geopolitical tensions.
