Mumbai, Apr 17: In a significant stride toward transforming urban mobility, Mumbai achieved a key engineering breakthrough on Metro Line 7A, as the tunnel at Bamanwadi was successfully completed. The event was commemorated in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who hailed it as a milestone in the city's expanding metro journey.

Metro Line 7A is a 3.4-kilometre extension of the operational Line 7, which currently connects Dahisar East to Gundavli. This extension will link Mumbai's metro network directly to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMI), promising a smoother, faster commute for travellers from both north and south Mumbai.

The line will feature two strategically located stations: an elevated stop at Airport Colony and an underground station at the airport terminal itself. Once operational, the line is expected to slash travel times by up to an hour, particularly benefiting commuters from Mira-Bhayandar and Colaba.

The project, managed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), is currently 52% complete, with the full line targeted for launch by December 2026. Metro Line 7A is envisioned as a game-changing link between the city’s core and its most vital transit gateway.

To make way for the project, MMRDA undertook the resettlement of 200 hutments and executed the rerouting of a major sewer line. Speaking at the ceremony, CM Fadnavis praised the complexity and ambition of the project:

“This is an engineering marvel—combining elevated and underground sections. It will connect north and south Mumbai directly to the airport. We’re working towards having **100 kilometres of metro lines operational in Mumbai by next year. The metro will become the city’s new lifeline.”

MMRDA is currently overseeing the development of a 337-kilometre metro network across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. With Lines 1, 2A, and 7 already in operation, the pace of infrastructure development continues on Lines 2B, 4, 5, 6, 7A, 9, and 12, aiming to create a truly integrated and modern public transport system for the city.
