Guwahati, Apr 20: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police seized narcotics worth over Rs 73.2 crore in two separate operations within a span of 24 hours, arresting three accused including a woman drug peddler.

In the latest operation on Saturday, the STF nabbed a woman identified as Sajida Begum (32) from Sawkuchi area near Guwahati and recovered 278.28 grams of heroin from her possession. The contraband is estimated to be worth Rs 2.2 cr. Along with the drugs, police also seized Rs 1.49 lac in cash and a mobile phone from her.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to commend the STF for their swift and effective action in the war against drugs.

This follows a massive seizure on Friday, where STF personnel intercepted two vehicles in Assam's Kamrup district and confiscated narcotics worth Rs 71 cr. The bust included 2.7 lac Yaba (methamphetamine) tablets valued at Rs 67 cr from a truck and 520 grams of heroin worth Rs 4 cr from a Hyundai car. The drugs were packed in 40 soap boxes.

Two men—Nur Islam (34) and Nazrul Hussain alias Ali Hussain (22)—were arrested during the Friday operation. Investigators believe that both the Yaba tablets and heroin were smuggled in from Myanmar and brought into Assam through a neighbouring state, likely en route to Bangladesh or other parts of India.

The April 18 raid was led by STF Chief Parthasarathi Mahanta, with Additional SP Kalyan Pathak playing a key role in the joint operation.

Officials said the STF continues to intensify its surveillance and crackdown on cross-border drug networks, with special focus on smuggling routes connecting Myanmar, Northeast India, and Bangladesh.
