Bhubaneswar, Apr 20: In a quiet but powerful revolution, the women of Odisha are turning dreams into reality through the transformative 'Lakhpati Didi' initiative, which is rewriting the narrative of rural empowerment.
Spearheaded jointly by the Odisha government and the Centre under the Odisha Livelihoods Mission (OLM), the programme is enabling women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to become financially self-reliant and socially empowered.

The scheme provides zero-interest loans of up to Rs 5 lakh, skill development training, and entrepreneurial support—paving the way for rural women to launch or expand their ventures in sectors ranging from tailoring to manufacturing.
Among the many inspiring stories is that of Rihana Begum, who now earns a steady income through her tailoring business. “I bought a sewing machine with the SHG loan. Apart from stitching clothes, I now teach other women. This scheme has given me the wings of confidence,” she shared.
Madhusmita Sahu, another beneficiary, started a paper plate-making unit that now sustains her and creates job opportunities for others. “The support I received helped me not just gain financial independence, but also empower those around me,” she said.
Through such initiatives, women across Odisha are stepping beyond traditional roles to become agents of change—creating livelihoods, strengthening communities, and contributing to a more inclusive economy.
The 'Lakhpati Didi' scheme stands as a testament to what can be achieved when government policy aligns with grassroots resilience.
